Air Pollution
10 of the top 20 most polluted cities in the
world are in India22
What is air pollution?
Air pollution is anything you breathe in, that damages the cells in your body.
Common air pollutants include:6
- Gases
- nitrogen oxides (NOX)
- ozone (O3),
- Sulphur dioxide (SO2)
- Particulate matter (PM): mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets that form in the air.
Tiny PM2.5 particles of air pollution
cause the greatest health problems,6 even though
you can’t see them.
More about particulate matter
Particulate matter can be made up of hundreds of different chemicals, come in many sizes and contain a mixture of:6
- Soot
- Dust
- Pollen
- Smoke
- Liquid droplets
You can’t see, smell or taste it – it is a hidden danger.
The greatest health problems from PM are caused by the smallest particles (PM10 or less), which can be inhaled into the lungs.6
- Very fine particles, less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5), are even more dangerous because they are inhaled deeper into the lungs10
- They then spread through your body via the bloodstream, harming vital organs like the heart and brain11
- PM2.5 is smaller than a piece of pollen, a grain of sand or a speck of dust
Where does air pollution come from?11
- Road transport
- Burning fuel in houses for heating or cooking
- Emissions from power generation
- Industrial processes
- Agriculture
Events which include firework displays, such as Diwali, can cause increased levels of PM in the air.
How air pollution is measured
Government agencies measure air pollution using the Air Quality Index (AQI) and classify it according to the following categories.
Environmental Protection Agency AQI23
India National AQI

Why is air pollution a problem?
The World Health Organization estimates that over 92% of people live in areas where air quality falls short of safe guidelines and 6.5 million people die annually, as a result of exposure to dirty air.2
How does air pollution affect you?
Exposure to air pollution has negative health consequences at every stage of life, from before birth into old age including short term, immediate symptoms but also more serious conditions related to longer-term exposure.6,9 For more information visit our Health Impact section.
